Santa Barbara County Jail On Lockdown And Inmates Relocated After Fire

JailThe cause of a fire at Santa Barbara County Jail is being investigated.  It broke out yesterday afternoon and the jail was put on lockdown.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office says the fire started in a large trash can filled with clothing, bedding and other items around 3:50 PM at the main jail.

Officials say about 25 of the inmates suspected of causing the fire barricaded themselves inside their cells as they yelled and threw more debris into the fire.  It re-ignited and firefighters put it out.

The Sheriff's Special Operations Response Team used chemical agents to acquire “inmate compliance.”

Officials say that during the evacuation two fights broke out among inmates, causing minor injuries.

Inmates affected by the chemicals and smoke were assessed on site and temporarily relocated to other parts of the jail.
