Man Arrested in Santa Maria for Burglary and Arson


A Canoga Park man was arrested yesterday morning in Santa Maria for burglary and arson. Local business security personnel called 911 and reported a man had shattered a window and opened a door into one of the building’s offices. Police surrounded the place and ordered anyone inside to come out, and shortly after Isael Vasquez surrendered without incident. Vasquez attempted to light a fire inside the building. He is currently in Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

Cal Poly Hosting NCAA Regional


Cal Poly will be hosting an NCAA Regional for the first time in NCAA I history. The Big West champion Mustangs, which set a school record for posting a 45-10 record in the regular season, will be hosting four games Friday-Monday at Baggette Stadium. Cal Poly will be hosting Sacramento State, Arizona State and Pepperdine.  Cal Poly will face-off against Sacramento State, and the winner will go on to play against the winner of the Arizona State/Pepperdine matchup. The winner of the SLO Regionals will face the winner of the Fort Worth Regionals.

SLO City Council Candidate Drops Out of Race


City-of-San-Luis-ObispoSLO City Council candidate Eric Meyer has announced that he is dropping out of the race. Meyer, an entrepreneur and former city planning commissioner, said in a letter to supporters that friendship means more to him that political aspirations.

Three council seats are up for election in November. Mayor Jan Marx and Councilwoman Carlyn Christiansen will seek re-election, while Councilwoman Kathy Smith will not seek re-election. Two other candidates have declared their candidacy for city council, Gordon Muller a financial planner with Zuk Financial Group and Daniel Gano, executive director of UK nonprofit LINK.

Man Arrested for Robbing The Sub


San Luis Obispo Police Officers say they arrested Morro Bay resident Eric Abril, who was charged for robbing The Sub. At 8:30 last night, police received a report that one of the employees was assaulted. The unidentified victim was found with significant facial injuries from being kicked in the head. The employee was hospitalized.

Police found a man who matched the suspect description hiding in the bushes on Higuera and Marsh Street, tried to talk to him but he ran away. SLOPD told KVEC Morning News that the man was running through the creek. SLOPD, Sheriff’s K-9 Investigation and Cal Poly University Police chased him for 20 minutes before they caught him at the U.S. Post Office on Dalidio

Missing Child Found Yesterday


The 13-year-old Atascadero boy missing since Monday morning was found yesterday afternoon and is reunited with his grandparents. Jeremiah Austin Valdez was found at a local junior high school after making Facebook posts and contacting someone at the school, who contacted the police. It was not immediately clear where the juvenile had been since Monday.

Strawberry Festival This Weekend


The 31st annual Arroyo Grande Strawberry Festival starts Saturday and runs through Sunday. Guests can enjoy live entertainment, carnival games, and plenty of strawberries. Arroyo Grande police say the event attracts crowds of up to 100,000 people, so police are closing streets, creating detours and designated parking areas, and providing transportation to visitors. Free bus transportation to the festival picks up at the Saint Patrick's Catholic School on Rodeo Drive at West Branch Street, as well as the Arroyo Grande High School parking lot on Fair Oaks Avenue and Valley Road.

DUI Checkpoints Throughout Central Coast


DUI checkpoints will be set up throughout the Central Coast this weekend. One checkpoint will be in Oceano on Saturday. Extra officers will be on duty in San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach, and Atascadero. The California Highway Patrol will start its maximum enforcement period at 6:00 p.m. Friday through midnight Monday.

Standoff in SLO Ends Peacefully


A man barricaded himself in a San Luis Obispo apartment yesterday after the San Luis Obispo Gang Task Force tried to arrest him. The man, identified as Grover Beach resident Austin Ross, was wanted for possessing a firearm and a stolen vehicle. The standoff began at around 2 p.m., when Ross came outside briefly and then went back inside his girlfriend’s apartment on Stenner Street and refused to come out.

Missing Child from Atascadero


Atascadero police are searching for a missing juvenile. Thirteen-year old Jeremiah Valdez left his home without permission and his whereabouts are unknown. Valdez is considered to be at-risk because of his age and the fact that he is on depression medication. He is not considered suicidal and is believed to be going towards his mother in Hanford, California. Valdez is described as a 5 foot 5 Hispanic male who was last seen wearing a shirt with racing numbers on it, blue jeans and black shoes.
