San Luis Obispo County’s 5.2 percent jobless rate in April is the lowest unemployment rate for the county since May 2008. This puts San Luis Obispo County as sixth best among California's 58 counties, with Marin County as the lowest at 3.9 percent and Imperial County as the highest with 21.6 percent.

Fire officials are calling this one of the worst fire seasons on record in California. The Lompoc Fire Department described the recent San Miguelito fire as “fair”, saying that residents need to be prepared to evacuate at any time. Otherwise, they could be trapped.
Officials say residents should have a “go-bag” filled with important documents, medication, identification and other important items ready just in case. The Board of Trustees of the California State University will hold a public hearing today in Long Beach about the proposed dorms on the Cal Poly campus. The dorms would be at the Grand Avenue entrance to campus and would house about 1500 freshmen. Cal Poly hopes to have the dorms completed by 2018. A three-vehicle accident occurred traffic collision occurred on Broad Street yesterday. SLO resident Derek Johnson hit the car in front of him, and the car propelled forward and hit another car stopped at a red light. A large fight occurred at a wedding reception at Moose Lodge last Saturday. The fight broke out in the parking lot, requiring officers from other police departments to break up the fight. The suspect, Oceano transient Daniel Berumen, was a guest at the reception and assaulted two people during the fight.
Both victims had severe injuries to the head and hand likely caused by a knife. The victims were hospitalized, but their injuries were not life-threatening. Berumen is currently in SLO County Jail and is being charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery.Read More »
A suspected DUI driver was hospitalized with major injuries at 9 Sunday night after a traffic collision on State Route 41. A 71-year-old from Cayucos was driving on State Route 41, south of Bear Ridge around 9:00 p.m. Sunday. Police say Atascadero resident Roberta Silva was driving north on Highway 41 and Silva over the double yellow lines right into the path of the other car. Silva was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, and authorities say she will face DUI charges. The driver of the other car and his passenger both suffered minor injuries. A Santa Maria man was stabbed early Saturday morning. Police officers responded to a report of a disturbance on W. Lee Drive in Santa Maria and detained several people who were driving away from the area. The unidentified victim was taken to a local hospital in a private vehicle, and his injuries were not life threatening. The stabbing is still under investigation.Read More »
A Paso Robles woman was killed in a single car accident Friday. Investigators say the driver was driving on Spring Street a little after 1 a.m. when she hit a parked vehicle and then hit a curb, causing the car rolled onto the driver’s side. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and will not be identified until next-of-kin have been notified. It is unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved.
Cal Poly students have given a family in need the house of their dreams. Through a program called Polyhouse, 26 Project Management graduate students give an extreme home makeover. They remodeled a family's home in Grover Beach and unveiled it on Sunday. The resident has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, so the home was remodeled to fit his needs. The remodeled home features a handicap accessible bathroom, a new kitchen, and a lift to help the man living there get out of bed and into his wheelchair. The students held fundraisers to pay for the remodeling and received donations from local businesses.
