KVEC Morning News has an update on the homicide investigation in Templeton that we reported on yesterday. The victim, who was stabbed and died in the hospital, has been identified as Tina Beddow. The suspect has been identified as Phillip Haines. Investigators believe that this was an isolated case of domestic violence. Beddow and Haines and a five-year-old child who is related to the suspect were inside the home at the time of the murder. The child has been placed in Child Welfare Services. A Paso Robles city employee has been sentenced to 20 days in jail. Charles Lorenzen, the former building, parks and streets supervisor of Paso Robles, was arrested on May 27 on charges of embezzling thousands of dollars from the city. Lorenzen faced three felony charges of grand theft and a misdemeanor charge of petty theft. In the plea agreement, Lorenzen plead guilty to the petty theft charge and the three felony charges were dropped. Lorenzen had been investigated for using his city credit card for personal purchases. He is currently out of jail on a $20,000 bond.Read More »
Santa Maria will be going to court against an advocacy group. The group, named CAUSE, is trying to get Santa Maria to change its election rules so city council members are elected by district rather than by the city at-large. CAUSE’s proposal needed more than 2700 signatures to be on the November ballot. The proposal ended up getting more than 5000 signatures in a two-month time span. But the city rejected the proposal on the grounds that it didn’t conform to the state election code. CAUSE believes that their errors are minor, and hence they are taking the matter into court. A hearing is set for June 17.
A memorial service for SLO High graduate Christopher Michaels-Martinez, who was shot and killed in Elliot Rodger’s shooting spree in Isla Vista on May 23, will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. The memorial will be at Mountainbrook Community Church, 1775 Calle Joaquin, in San Luis Obispo. The results from the election last night are in, and KVEC Morning News has obtained the results. Deputy District Attorney Dan Dow won the SLO County District Attorney, beating Assistant District Attorney Tim Covello 53% to 44%. Incumbent 2nd District County Supervisor Bruce Gibson cruised to reelection over Muril Clift, 67% to 33% and Morro Bay Mayor Jamie Irons kept his seat with 57% to 43% victory over Carla Wixom. Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian crushed his opponent Heidi Harmon 64% to 36%.

The San Luis Obispo Superior Court is warning residents of an e-mail scam. The e-mail claims to be from the clerk of the court and says it’s a “Notice to Appear in Court”. Officials say that the court doesn’t e-mail residents to appear in court, and if you get an e-mail like that, delete it immediately. The e-mail likely contains a virus or malware to install onto your computer.Read More »
A Paso Robles High School teacher was arrested for allegedly having sex with a student. Police say their investigation started on Sunday, when a 16-year old female student disclosed that she had been having a sexual relationship with her teacher. The teacher, Jeremy Monn, was arrested for sexual intercourse with a minor. Monn was an agricultural teacher.Read More »
A fire occurred in Santa Maria at around 12:31 this morning. Firefighters arrived at North Blosser and found a seatrain against the back of Rick’s Cabinets store engulfed in flames. The fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage and everything inside was deemed as a loss. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Today is Election Day, and KVEC Morning News has a summary of the seats up for grabs in today’s primary. Locally, there are two contested county supervisor seats on the ballot, a heated race for District Attorney, open seats for County Clerk-Recorder and Superintendent of Schools, and a Morro Bay mayoral and city councilmember race. Richard Martinez, the father of deceased UCSB student Chris Martinez in the Isla Vista shooting, met with Peter Rodger, the father of shooter Elliot Rodger. Martinez discussed the details of his private meeting with Rodger on Ronan Farrow Daily on MSNBC, in which he said that he and Rodger agreed to work together to lobby politicians for tighter gun regulation. Martinez said in the interview that his almost 30 years of experience as an attorney helps him understand how the Rodgers are feeling, as he has worked in cases with good parents who have mentally ill children.Read More »
