On Sunday April 21, at about 1:41 p.m., Grover Beach Police Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Beckett Street for a report of an assault in progress. As the first officer was arriving on scene, additional 911 calls came into the Grover Beach Police Dispatch Center requesting medical assistance at the same location.
As the first officer contacted the group involved in the calls for service, he discovered a 69-year-old male victim who was not breathing and did not have a pulse. The officer initiated CPR and was assisted by an additional arriving officer until medical personnel arrived on scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed a neighbor dispute between the 69-year-old victim, his 32-year-old son and their neighbor, 54-year-old Jerry Odom.
During the altercation Odom physically assaulted both victims knocking them to the ground. It was during this altercation that the 69-year-old victim went into cardiac arrest. He was transported to a local area hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
The identities of the victims will not be released pending notification of family members.
Odom was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse and battery. His bond is currently set at $50,000.
