If you find yourself in the county women's jail in a few years, you'll at least have a bit more leg room. The Board of Supervisors has approved of an additional $2.14 million for construction management services to expand the jail.
The project will relieve overcrowding. The facility was originally built for 43 inmates, but at times it has contained more than 80.
About six years after the county grand jury recommended the jail be enlarged, the county began setting aside money for the project in 2005. It also received a large state grant in 2008.
The estimated cost for the project is nearly $39 million. State funding will cover about $25 million. The county will pay for the rest and hopes to complete the expansion by March 2016.
